Roulette EtiquetteRoulette is a popular casino game that has been around for a long time. It can be played in almost every land-based and online casino in either the U.S. or overseas. Despite its high house edge, the game still attracts a large number of players, maybe because the game has always had sort of a classy image. Like every casino game, roulette has its own rules and even a set of etiquette that players must follow. So what are these etiquette laws? Are they complicated or intimidating? Well, no, they are not. Roulette etiquette is very simple and easy to remember, even for a beginner. How To Start: Place Your BetsIf you are going to play roulette, you first need to know how to place your bets. When you go up to the roulette table, you have to place your chips on the table layout. The dealer will give you a certain time period in which to place your wagers. This period takes place between each spin and each player has about 60 seconds to place their bets. Even after the wheel is spun, you will still have a few more seconds to place a bet. But once the dealer raises his hand and says “No more bets”, then it is too late to lay another wager. You shouldn’t ask to place another bet after that time and you should wait until the wheel is ready to be spun again. The same is true for when to place your bets. You should wait for the dealer to call “Place your bets” before you do so. Don’t Touch Your MarkerThis is a very important rule of etiquette for a roulette player to remember. As the wheel spins, the ball will drop into either a red or black slot. When this happens, the dealer will place a roulette marker on the table to indicate what slot the ball fell into. After they do that, the dealer will remove all losing bets and then pay all the players with winning bets before they remove the roulette marker. While the dealer is doing all of this, a player should not touch their own markers. It’s considered a form of cheating and if you do it, you will be asked to immediately leave the casino. Do not pass GO. Do not collect $200. Roulette ChipsRoulette chips only have value at the roulette table. They are worthless the moment you leave the table so before you get up and walk away from the table, make sure you exchange you roulette tips for casino chips. Otherwise, you may find yourself with a big pile of useless chips. Most casinos have colored roulette chips with a number or design on them to designate which roulette table the chips belong to. These chips can only be used at that table. Each set of table chips usually come in six or seven different colors so that most seated players will have there own color. This is designed to reduce confusion or prevent someone else trying to claim your chip stack after a spin. Behave YourselfIt’s important to always be courteous, not just at the roulette table but at any casino game. Don’t get drunk and spill your drink on someone. Don’t reach across and accidentally knock over someone’s chips. Be polite to the dealer because they can make all the difference between a good table experience and a bad one. In the United States, tipping the dealer is encouraged and I recommend doing it every so often if you are winning. But if you are playing in a European casino, don’t bother. Tipping European dealers is not allowed. Speaking of European versus U.S. casinos, there is a big atmospheric difference you need to be aware of if you are going to play. European casinos are usually more elegant and sometimes require formal wear. You may even have to be a member in order to play there. European roulette is a quiet, slower-paced game, usually frequented by women and systems players. In most U.S. casinos, the atmosphere is much more casual, energetic, and open to the public. U.S. roulette is a faster-paced game that is played by everyone and can be much more exciting than the European version. |
