Roulette Games

English Harbour Casino RouletteRoulette games are available in just about every casino that you walk into or log onto. Roulette is one of those popular casino games that have stood the test of time. The game is easy to learn and play but like any casino game that has that kind of appeal, the house edge is high. Still, it’s an entertaining game and if you are going to play roulette, there are a few things you need to know. The main thing is that there are two major versions of roulette that you can play; American roulette and European roulette. Although they are both similar and have the same function, there are some important differences.

European Roulette Games

The main difference between European roulette and American roulette is that the European roulette wheel has 37 numbers ranging from 0 to 36. By adding the 0, the house gains an edge of 2.7% that they normally wouldn’t have without it. When you break it down into mathematics, this means that every time $100 is bet, the house makes a profit of $2.70. The European house edge has much better odds than American roulette, which is doubled from the European version. This means that if you are looking for a roulette game to play, try to find a European one.

European roulette also uses the en prison rule. This is an optional rule that comes into play when the ball lands on the “0”. When this happens, the croupier gives the player the option of surrendering half their wager or keeping it all in for the next spin. If the imprisonment bet wins for the next spin, then the player gets all of their wager back.

Another difference between European roulette and American roulette is that the croupier for European roulette uses a long stick, called a rake, to sweep the chips off the table after each spin. Also, the European version uses roulette chips that are all the same colored. This means that players must remember which wagers on the table are theirs and must always be on their guard against other players who may, accidentally or intentionally, try to claim their wager.

American Roulette Games

In the American version of roulette, the roulette wheel contains 38 numbers ranging from 0, 00, and 1 through 36. All the slots numbered from 1 to 36 are divided evenly between red and black while the “0” and “00” are both green. By adding the additional “00”, the house gains a much larger advantage of 5.26%. This means that for every $100 wagered, the house is going to pull down $5.26. This is double that of the European roulette version.

Another difference in American versus European roulette is the American version of roulette uses different-colored roulette chips. These chips usually have a number or symbol on them to designate at which roulette table they are to be used. By giving the chips different colors, each player at the table can have their own color which makes it easier to keep up with their own wagers. This is designed to prevent confusion or cheating, which is known to happen with the European roulette version.

American roulette has a couple of variations, as well. There is the single zero wheel that can be found in most high-end casinos within the USA. Single zero wheels are available in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, the Foxwoods in Connecticut, and The Grand in Tunica. Single zero wheels have a higher limit than the standard double zero wheels. The house edge on single zero wheels is the same as the European version.

Roulette in Atlantic City follows a variation of the en prison rule from the European version of roulette. When the ball falls in the slot for either “0” or “00”, the player will lose half of any even money bets. This rule is not available on single zero wheels and the house edge drops to 2.63%.

American roulette is the version available in casinos in North America and everywhere online that accepts U.S. players. There are a few casinos out there that offer the European version and it is starting to pop up at some online casinos in order to offer more variety.

Other Roulette Games

There are a few other roulette versions that need to be mentioned. There is a French roulette variation that is rare but offered in a few online casinos. It is pretty much the same as European roulette but all bets are in French and the bets are called and the croupier places the bets for you.

Roulette Royale is another version that is similar to American Roulette but has a Progressive jackpot attached to it. If the player hits a certain number or bet then they win the jackpot, which can range from a few hundred dollars on up to several thousand dollars. Roulette Royal is only offered in a couple of online casinos but with the growing popularity of progressive jackpots, there should be more available soon.
