Roulette WheelThe roulette wheel is the device used to randomize numbers in
roulette. A small metal ball is spun on the wheel. When the ball
loses velocity, it drops into one of the numbered slots on the
wheel. If you bet on that number or color, then you win the bet.
The roulette wheel is a much more entertaining way to randomize
numbers than a random number generator, for instance, though
roulette wheels tend to have a mesmerizing quality to them.
It might seem at first glance that betting colors on roulette is a 50/50 proposition. Actually, it is not. That's because the roulette wheel also contains a "0". If you bet on either black or red and the number comes up zero, you lose either way. This is how the casino maintains a house edge on their roulette games. Some roulette wheels have more than one 0, which becomes important when trying to decide which roulette wheel game you should play. European Roulette or American RouletteThere are two major types of roulette wheel. The first is the French roulette wheel, also known as the European roulette wheel. The second type is the American roulette wheel. Understanding the difference in the two is important, because European roulette is more profitable for the player than the American game. The reason is the inclusion of an extra "roulette number" on the American roulette wheel. On a European roulette wheel, you will have 1-36 as well as 0 on the wheel -- for a total of 37 numbered slots. On an American roulette wheel, though, there is an extra zero slot. This is the "00" slot. So an American roulette wheel has 1-36, 0 and 00 on the wheel. You can probably see why it's better to play French or European roulette than American roulette. American RouletteAmerican roulette wheels have an extra number, 00, which means the number you bet on is less likely to come up. The "00" roulette wheel lowers your chances of winning. For instance, if you bet red or black, there are now 2 slots instead of 1 that you automatically lose on -- no matter which color you choose. Even or Odd RouletteThe same goes for even/odd bets in roulette. Just like black/red, you can select whether the metal ball will land on the even or the odd numbers. In American roulette, there will be two numbers (0,00) which are neither even or odd, so your chances of losing greatly increase. Consider that in 100 spins, the ball will (on average) land on 00 over 2.5 times. This significantly lowers your winning percentage, probably between 2.5% and 3%. For this reason, American casino roulette players won't find many European roulette wheels when they go to the local casino. They can still be found, especially in larger casinos, but it will be harder. For the most part, American roulette gamblers should expect to play the less profitable 00 game. If you have the choice, though, always play on the roulette wheel with no "00". |
